3D Printing vs. Injection Molding for Amazon FBA
If you sell on Amazon FBA and your product is a physical part, the choice between 3D printing and injection molding shapes your margins, your speed-to-market, and how quickly you can iterate. Here's how the two stack up for FBA sellers.
Upfront cost and MOQs
Injection molding requires a steel or aluminum tool that typically runs $3,000–$50,000+ and takes 4–10 weeks to cut. To amortize that tool, most molders enforce minimum order quantities of 500–10,000 units per run. 3D printing has zero tooling: the STL is the tool. You can produce 10 units or 10,000 with the same setup, which is why 3D printing wins for new SKUs, low-volume products, and testing before you commit to a mold.
Speed to market
A molded part is 8–14 weeks from CAD to shelf once you count tooling, first-article inspection, and revisions. A 3D-printed part is hours to days. For an FBA seller racing a trend or launching seasonal SKUs, that gap is the difference between catching the wave and missing it.
Iteration cost
Changing an injection-molded part means cutting new steel — often another five figures and another lead time. Changing a 3D-printed part means uploading a new STL. FBA products live and die on reviews; the ability to fix a fit issue in a week (not a quarter) protects your listing.
Per-unit cost at scale
Traditionally, injection molding wins on per-part cost past a few thousand units. Modern 3D printing mass production narrows that gap: a farm of hundreds of printers running continuously produces parts at prices that are competitive with molding for many SKUs — without the tool, the MOQ, or the lead time. For most FBA sellers under ~5,000 units/month, 3D printing is the better economic choice.
